The Barnett Shale is a shale rock formation located in the Bend Arch-Fort Worth Basin. The formation lies beneath the city of Fort Worth and stretches about 5,000 miles, underlying at least 17 counties in the area. In 2007, experts suggested that the Barnett Shale formation might have the largest producible reserves of any onshore natural gas field in the United States. Until recently, it was virtually impossible to produce gas in commercial quantities from this formation. However, improvements in hydraulic fracturing technology and horizontal drilling have made these natural-gas resources more accessible.
