The Haynesville Shale is a rock formation that underlies large parts of southwestern Arkansas, northwest Louisiana, and East Texas. This formation spans an area of 9,000 square miles and averages about 200 to 300 feet thick. Similar to the Barnett Shale formation, Haynesville shale was not an economically feasible option until improvements in drilling technology and the utilization of horizontal drilling were initiated. In January 2013, this formation produced 6.2 billion cubic feet of gas per day, 9.3% of all the natural-gas produced in the United States.
